Blog #61 – The Return of Aldrin

First the harvest, then the harrowing. Feasting on the readymeals served up by the combine last week was none other than Aldrin the buzzard (Blog#25). That’s him/her, perched on top of what turned out to be a very transient temple. And this stupendous creature wasn’t alone. Aldrin was joined – at one time or another – by a kestrel, a sparrow hawk and remarkably, a red kite, all keen to sample Field 59’s seasonal produce. This is practically the full set of birds of prey you can reasonably hope to see around here, leaving aside the owls. In the words of many an athlete, I’m stoked.

Hopefully, even if you have been glued to coverage of the olympics, as we have, some of you may have had opportunity to take on the Villanelle, as outline in Blog #60. Don’t forget to let us know how you get on. There’ll be more from the Crib Notes Summer School next week, this time exploring the bijou form of the tanka.

Meanwhile you might like to catch up with some more writerly thoughts. Given Aldrin’s reappearance, they are rather appropriate: Killing your Darlings is part of the Royal Literary Fund’s VOX series, published in recorded form on Wednesday 4 August.

Enjoy, and see you again soon at the wordcage.
